Critics Consensus

The Exorcist III is a talky, literary sequel with some scary moments that rival anything from the original.

The Exorcist III | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Anton Bitel Little White Lies Watching The Exorcist III is a frustrating experience, with both cuts of the film - one a victim of studio tampering, the other imperfectly restored - pointing to the better version of themselves that, like Karras, remains hidden within. Dec 9, 2019 Full Review The Exorcist III | Rotten Tomatoes (2) A.A. Dowd AV Club Against his will, Blatty added the sound-and-fury finale, and it's easily the weakest aspect of his movie. But that's mainly because everything that comes before it is so hauntingly understated. Oct 8, 2018 Full Review The Exorcist III | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Kim Newman Empire Magazine Too much of the movie takes place in dark rooms where people describe horrors that might more profitably have been on the screen, and the plot is a house of cards that constantly collapses. Rated: 2/5 Oct 8, 2018 Full Review The Exorcist III | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Matthew Pejkovic Matt's Movie Reviews Dialogue driven and atmospheric blend of serial killer thrills and supernatural chills. Rated: 4/5 Oct 13, 2023 Full Review The Exorcist III | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Cheryl Eddy io9.com The series' best sequel to date. Sep 22, 2023 Full Review The Exorcist III | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Matt Brunson Film Frenzy The film is excessive in many spots -- did we really need a lavish dream sequence, or cameos by the likes of Larry King, former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, and Fabio? Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 1, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Chris G Haunting, carefully paced, and filled with brilliant shots, the exorcist 3 is an uneven but well written horror threequel. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/01/24 Full Review Farah R Although it's nowhere near as grand as the original Exorcist, this underrated sequel provides ample entertainment by combining elements of a murder mystery and a possession plot. Brad Dourif delivered a gripping performance that made it easy to stay invested in the story and stick around for its conclusion. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/12/24 Full Review g j Maligned and unfairly misunderstood, this film's biggest flaw is the studio messing with its script and forcing Blatty to put a silly and contrived subplot into his film that only detracts from the story he is trying to tell (and its restraint). The core of the movie, and George. C. Scott's strong and engaging performance remain a horror classic that is truly unique in ideas and theme. This is perhaps one of the finest roles in Brad Dourif's career. His monologues here are truly terrifying. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/06/24 Full Review Gaming U So much talking that it feels like a lecture Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/09/24 Full Review Mark H This is the real squeal. Great story, Great acting. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/05/24 Full Review Lou T The Exorcist is one of the greatest horror films I have ever seen, but was followed by one of the worst films of any genre that I have ever seen with The Exorcist 2. After some hesitation, I jumped into this film with no expectations and I could not have been happier. The Exorcist 3 excels and matching the quality delivered by the original, but delivers it in such different ways. George C. Scott and Brad Dourif create masterpieces each time they're on screen together, with the rest of the cast excelling throughout. Dourif's monologues leave goosebumps on your body and has you peeking from between fingers as he fully encompasses his terrifying role. The story moves away from the supernatural for a bit and instead takes us on a psychological thriller, which will have you wondering how it ties together with the rest of the franchise. When the reveals are made and the story plays out, you are left with an exceptionally creepy, unsettling, and incredibly satisfying chapter in the Exorcist saga. With an excellent story, masterclass performances, and horrific effects, The Exorcist 3 goes down as one of the best horror movies in the genre and may just be the best in the franchise.
